Instructors in Focus: Powerboat Instructors

Published Mon 13 Sep 2021

Powerboat Instructors teach participants the theory, rules and skills required to safely drive a small powerboat.

Powerboats are fast and responsive and represent a great craft to travel, work or just have fun on water. In addition to the Instructor, powerboats can hold several course participants too so the learning experience is engaging and fun.

Powerboat participants include both teenagers, young and less young adults and they have all different reasons to attend the course. Some want to acquire the basic competencies to then buy a boat and others are keen to upgrade their powerboating skills for recreational or business purposes.

Accredited Discover Sailing Centres use only Australian Sailing qualified Powerboat Instructors to deliver their Powerboat courses. This enables participants to learn effectively in a safe and enjoyable environment. Centres can benefit from and leverage Powerboat Instructors to train not only the public but also their own club staff, sailing instructors, officials and members that can consequently contribute to club operations thanks to completing a powerboat course and obtaining the related certificate (note state maritime regulations apply about driving license).

Powerboat Instructors can teach the first two levels of the Powerboat courses, Start Powerboat and Powerboat Handling. These courses cover topics such as powerboating rules, weather, equipment, safety and basic skills including departing and returning to shore, steering and high-speed manoeuvres. Instead, Safety Boat Instructors can teach all three levels of the Powerboat program including the Safety Boat Operator, the highest-level course. This course is aimed at those who want to become more involved in the on-water activities at their sailing club. It includes topics such as race management, towing and rescue of other crafts.

Here some extra benefits of becoming a Powerboat Instructor:
