General Manager - Tasmania Monthly Update August 2023

Published Tue 15 Aug 2023

As the opening of the sailing season gets closer, sailing committees are busy organising their calendars and events. This is the perfect opportunity to share that information with Australian Sailing so that we can help promote and support you with your club’s sailing. I am seeing in Tasmania positive discussions between clubs and interest in working together with the intention to build a stronger sailing community where new sailors will want to be involved in the sport of sailing.

With many AS courses being held in Tasmania over the quieter and colder months, there are numerous new Instructors, Coaches and soon to be Senior Instructors, Race Officers and Umpires. I congratulate those people who have taken on their new qualifications and thank the people who helped run these courses.

As the Tasmanian General Manager, I am fully aware of the difficulty that many clubs are having with aging infrastructure and the need for funds to improve buildings. I have recently met with other GM’s from various sports who are also dealing with the same issue. We have requested a meeting with Nick Street, Minister of Sport, for a meeting to express our concerns. As a collaborative group, we are hoping that our concerns will more likely be heard, and that in the future we will see better support for sporting communities. This week, I have also sent an email to all clubs about the recent grants that are now open for submission and suggest that if anyone requires support, please ask.

On Friday 11th August, all Commodores were sent a link to a ballot to vote for the new Tasmanian Regional Advisory Committee members. With only one submission per club, please follow up to ensure that your club has voted by COB Friday 18th August.

With many recent AGM’s being held, please ensure that your club contact details are up to date in revSPORT to ensure that there are current email addresses for ongoing communication. As clubs are now organising their calendars for the next season, please can you ensure that the following information is considered and included in your calendar. Any of the information below can be copied into your club newsletters to be shared with your members so that they know what is happening in Tasmania. Good communication is vital to our sport!

Please promote the Australian Sailing – Tasmania Facebook page, as this also includes all the up to date AS News, both State and Nationally.
