The Role
Reporting to the General Manager - WA, the Club Support Officer’s primary role is to develop working relationships with Clubs and Classes, enabling successful introduction and delivery of Australian Sailing programs and initiatives. Assigned a group of clubs and classes, the Club Support Officer’s role is to work with their allocated group of stakeholders to strive for sustainable growth in participation and membership.

Principle Accountabilities
The key responsibilities of a Club Support Officer are:

  • Clubs and Classes Support and Engagement:
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key personnel at Clubs, Discover Sailing Centres and Classes.
    • Membership system (revolutioniseSPORT) training with support from the central team.
    • Guide and support Clubs to establish and maintain effective management systems that will:
      • Develop the capability and capacity of Clubs, with regards to sport development and participation.
      • Develop and improve club governance including: Planning & Risk Management.
      • Ensure facilities are fit for purpose, safe and inclusive.
      • Improve membership services: Programs, Recruitment & Retention, including SailPass.
      • Assist to deliver the best possible events that are safe and inclusive.
      • Help market and promote Sailing, including websites to drive membership and increase participation.
    • Share best-practice from the Club Network and sport.
    • Provide input into the development of new resources for clubs and classes as required.
    • Promote local and state grants and other funding opportunities to Clubs.
    • Work collaboratively with other Australian Sailing staff to prepare, promote and deliver the annual Club Conference.
  • Grow Participation:
    • Seek to increase the number of Clubs delivering Australian Sailing accredited programs.
    • Support the development of Clubs and implementation of their participation pathways.
    • Work with accredited Discover Sailing Centres to:
      • Increase course participants, year-on-year.
      • Maximize their growth potential, productivity and efficiency.
      • Apply for, and then maintain their annual accreditation.
      • Ensure the Principal, and other staff, are inducted and trained into operating a Discover Sailing Centre.
      • Mentor Instructors and Principals and identify development opportunities.
      • Connect clubs to schools and other organisations to grow participation.
      • Work with Clubs and Centres to ensure the pathway from courses to membership and ongoing participation in the sport is known and understood by participants.

  • Facilitate Workforce Training (Coaches, Instructors & Officials):
    • Coordinate and administer training courses and connect Clubs to new instructors, officials, coaches or other workforce specialists.
    • Build positive working relationships with Senior Instructors and Senior Coaches.
    • Work with Clubs to recruit and train coaches, race officers and volunteers.
    • Administration support for instructors, coaches and officials.
    • Develop and maintain a calendar of training courses, ensuring they are visible on revSPORT..
    • Work proactively to ensure growth of qualified instructors, coaches and officials.
    • Working with the Education & Training team and Senior Instructors, prepare and deliver an annual Instructor/Coach and Discover Sailing Centre Principal Conference/workshop.

  • Project Involvement:
    • As agreed with the General Manager and/or National General Manager Club Support, take part in cross-departmental project teams that will be focused on product development, support resources for Clubs or review of processes and procedures.

  • Other duties as required.

Key Performance Indicators
Annual targets will be determined each year via the annual operational plan. They will include:

  • Develop and maintain resources for clubs, usage tracked via website clicks/visits.
  • Club Engagement, measured by Club Satisfaction Survey.
  • Visit Clubs and Discover Sailing Centres annually.
  • Complete annual Discover Sailing Centre Reviews, tracked via iAuditor.
  • Discover Sailing Course annual participant growth, as determined in the annual operation plan, tracked by revSPORT.
  • Workforce Targets, annual participant growth, as determined in the annual operation plan, New # instructors, # coaches, # officials, tracked via revSPORT.
  • Membership, including SailPass annual Growth & Retention, tracked via revSPORT.

Attributes

Qualifications & Experience

    • Sailing qualifications (instructor, coach or officials) and/or sailing experience.
    • Experience working or volunteering with a Sailing Club, including any committees.
    • Experience in working within a similar role, ideally within a not-for-profit/sport environment.
    • Well-developed written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Strong time management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines and remain composed under pressure.
    • Experience in working with a diverse range of stakeholders/volunteers.
    • High level of relationship management skills.
    • Highly developed organisational and administrative skills.
    • Able to create effective processes to improve the delivery of work and efficiency.
    • Highly developed computer skills.
    • Customer service.
    • Ability to manage a variety of conflicting priorities over extended periods.
    • Willingness and availability to work evenings and weekends as required.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
    • Relevant State Working with Children Check (willing to attain)
    • Relevant State Car Drivers Licence.
  • Desirable* experience, accreditation or licences (current or willing to attain):
    • Tertiary qualifications in sport management/business/management/training (or a related field) are highly desirable.
    • Relevant State Boat Drivers Licence.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences, including written and verbal and electronic channels.
  • IT skills, in particular with Microsoft 365 – Office, Teams, SharePoint, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the drivers and barriers of sports participation, and the ability to develop strategies toward increased participation.
  • Experience and technical knowledge of sailing as a recreational activity and as a competitive sport- either as a participant or in club administration.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as an effective part of a larger team while also managing various stakeholders.
  • Be a confident presenter and communicator, with a high level of interpersonal skills, with excellent relationship management, influencing and listening skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Planning – able to manage and prioritise multiple tasks, schedules and deadlines.
  • Capacity to utilise Social Media and other electronic marketing tools.
