Applecross Cup

Published Sat 18 Jul 2020

School holidays are upon us once again and with borders opening and everyone either up north basking in the Kimberley sun or toasting their toes in front of a log fire down in Denmark, sailors will still find an outlet.

Last weekend a steady number of off the beach dinghies hit the water for the South of Perth Yacht Club’s Applecross Cup. Fleets comprised of Optimist’s, Pelican’s, Open Skiff’s, Windsurfers, Bic Techno, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, Laser (Open), 125’s, 29er’s, Waszp’s, Moth’s and Flying Fifteens.

The Optimist fleet were to start first in each race until the overzealous and eager young sailors blew through the start line before the signal causing everyone to return. They all then spent a long time relegated to the back of the sequence as penance for their breach. Needless to say, the second start was a lot more conservative and subdued.

Race Office Les Swinton and his race crew handled the changing and dying conditions with their usual professionalism and praise form the sailors. Race 5 was cancelled later in the day allowing the lawn party and sharing of stories to commence in the SoPYC rigging area mid-afternoon.
