New Powerboat Instructors across Tasmania

Published Thu 09 May 2019

The Wynyard and Port Dalrymple Yacht Clubs, and Derwent Sailing Squadron have supported five people through the Australian Sailing Powerboat Instructor course enabling those clubs to be more capable, and self-sufficient in training their people.

The course, run twice first at the WYC and then at the DSS, goes for two days combining class room theory components, practice sessions delivering instruction on and off the water.

The Senior Instructor delivering the course, Carl Webste,r was complimentary of the facilities available at both the Wynyard Yacht Club and Derwent Sailing Squadron where the two courses were run. Carl was also impressed at how adept the participants were when doing the course. Carl remarked that not only did the clubs have great facilities, but their people were clearly familiar with instruction techniques and the nuances of powerboat handling.

From here the clubs, all Discover Sailing Centres, will be able to run the Powerboat courses themselves. This course is valuable as it helps aspiring Dinghy Instructors get some of the essential building blocks in place to becoming accredited instructor, and it also lifts the skills of on-water race committee with handling mark or rescue boats.

Other clubs who’ve trained up Powerboat Instructors in courses recently include the Port Cygnet Sailing Club, the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, and the Kingston Beach Sailing Club.
