From fast racer to comfy cruiser at SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week

Darren Drew normally arrives from NSW to the northern regatta circuit with one of Australia’s fastest ocean racing catamarans, his Crowther 50 catamaran Top Gun, but this time he surprised contemporaries by turning up at SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week (SMIRW) with Wind Cheetah, a smaller and heavier 1992 launched Arber Southeaster 38 cruising cat.

Club in Focus: Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club

Right in the heart of the working harbour of Newcastle, Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club (NCYC) sits peacefully away from the comings and goings of cargo ships. Founded in 1994 by a small group of enthusiastic sailors, NCYC has grown at an exponential rate, regularly hosting community events as well as sailing-focused activities, and national titles, winning the Australian Sailing Club of the Year award in 2019.

2022 Oceanic Laser Masters Championship

What a great regatta! Sunsets, palm trees, fighter jets, warm breezes, cocktails, good company, and new friends. The Oceanic Laser Masters has been hosted by Darwin Sailing Club with 37 competitors from Australia, Thailand & New Zealand competing in the week-long event. Competitors travelled from near & far, some drove their boats north whilst others decided charter boats were a better option.

VLA Try Laser Day

The Victorian Laser Association (VLA) had a successful Try Laser 4.7 Day for junior sailors of off the beach classes at Melbourne's Albert Sailing Club on a Sunday in late August. The Try Laser 4.7 Day was part of the Victorian Laser Association's 2022/23 program for sailors ranging from those in their early teens to Great Grand Masters.
