The Hobie Way of Life visits picturesque Esperance in the south of Western Australia

What a treat for the Hobie 16 teams who made the journey to Esperance for the Crossview Enterprises 2021 WA Hobie Cat State Championships. Located in the south east of the state of Western Australia Esperance is a unique holiday destination blessed with some of the most pristine waters, white sands and best beaches in the country. Competitors enjoyed fantastic conditions for Hobie Cat racing, right in front of the town centre.

The Bunbury and Return Ocean Race came about in 1948 when a few adventurous sailors from the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club decided to have a race from Fremantle to Bunbury. Thereafter it became an annual return race and is still to this day one of the favourite events on the Ocean Racing WA calendar. The 170 nautical mile course requires teams to settle into an offshore routine and consider their strategy for the expected weather conditions over the duration of the race.

Fastnet Race icon takes on Bunbury and Return Ocean Race in WA

She was built to race the 1971 Admiral’s Cup and became one of Australia’s most iconic ocean racing yachts. At the time the brief to designer Olin Stephens was to match the dominance of Syd Fischer’s Ragamuffin on the water, but no expense was to be spared to fit her out with comfort and opulence. Salacia II was to be faster and prettier. They became fierce competitors in events such as the Sydney to Hobart but raced alongside each other as teammates in the Admiral’s Cup.
